About This Bowl
The majority of heart disease risk factors are under your control.
Heart disease describes several problems related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries, atherosclerosis, irregular heartbeat or heart valve problems. Some factors do increase your risk of heart-related issues, and unfortunately not much can be done about them. It is important to know what they are and understand how they affect other factors that can minimise risk.
High-salt diets increase blood pressure and the risk of heart attack and stroke. Many of us consume more than ten times the amount of salt we need to meet our sodium requirements.
There is no 'magic' food to decrease the risk of developing heart disease. It is about having a healthy, balanced diet and making sure you have enough exercise.
However, there is evidence that plant foods - especially wholegrain cereals, legumes, nuts, fruits and vegetables - may decrease the risk of heart disease.
